![]() ![]() I’ve cleaned two of the multi-cavity tanks this way, including one from a Sierra, and have gotten reasonably good results. I took the cap off the radiator and saw the same sludge on the. The coolant in the tank was also murky and when i stirred it with a screwdriver the coolant is full of the same sludge. You should drain the coolant first and catch all. Where is the grey sludge spraying from If from the area of the radiator cap then the overflow tube is likely blocked as any overflow should go down the tube. ![]() Nothing moves in or out of the tank unless there is an over pressure condition or a vacuum in the cooling system. ( due to laziness and lack of time i didnt flush the block ) I rubbed my fingers where the upper radiator hose attaches to the motor and the coolant was clear. It should flush through the rad and block and come out at the thermostat. Initial thoughts: 1) E3) Remove the tank, clean it out, re-install, fill 1/2 way immediately. so couple days ago i opened my overflow tank and noticed that it was a brown gooey sludge inside i flushed the radiator and rinsed out the overflow real good. Shove a hose in the upper rad hose (towards the rad) and turn the hose on using your hands or a rag to block the water from coming back out. On my 2010 with 25,400 miles i noticed this morning quite a bit of a brownish sludge on the upper sides of the tank. Just disconnect the upper rad hose at the thermostate and remove the thermostat. It might also help to add some cleaner or soap for step 7. Brownish sludge in Radiator overflow tank. This should flush out a good bit of the sludge.ĥ) With as much water as possible in the tank, shake it vigorously and in different orientations while the water drains out the various openings.ħ) Plug all the hose connections and fill the tank up completely with water and let it sit for a half hour or so.Ĩ) Drain the tank and go back to step 4. Now is the time to put on a swim suit if you don’t like wet clothes.Ĥ) Use a garden hose with a nozzle and direct a strong spray in every opening (there is at least 3 counting the filler). It takes both time and work.Ģ) Take off all the tank’s hose connections.ģ) You are going to get wet. I’ve cleaned tanks like the one on your Sierra. Everyone knows Dexcool remains clean and sludge free in systems with pressurized overflow tanks, especially when it’s been changed 3 times in 7 years. ![]()
